Before a Set Is Bagged, It Is Laid Out and Checked

The last check happens before the bag, not after the box.

On our packing bench, every tournament set is laid out — sixteen black, sixteen white — before bagging. Kings and queens in place, knights facing the same way, pawns in a straight line. It takes a minute, and it catches what a quick count never will: a wrong piece, a mismatched shade, a felt base not sitting flat.

A set that looks right laid out plays right on the board. One that does not is pulled, fixed, and laid out again — never topped up from another batch to make up the number.

That is the quiet part of tournament consistency: not just making thirty-two pieces the same way, but checking all thirty-two together, set by set, before they travel.

For clubs and distributors ordering in bulk, the box you open is the box we checked.
